Emergency Care Practitioner

 

The role of the ENP is a Senior Nurse that has a clearly defined duel role within the Urgent Care Centre. The ENP is trained to an advanced level to not only work autonomously within defined parameters to deliver care to patients attending the Urgent Care Centre without reference to a doctor, but also to be a regular Shift Leader within the department. The role consists of clinical, managerial and educational components as detailed.

The ENP is expected to work collaboratively with the whole of the multidisciplinary team in order to be able to fulfil the role as outlined below.

 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical

  • Autonomous practitioner for patients attending the Urgent Care Centre.
  • To act as a senior Shift Leader in the department.
  • To be a resource of clinical knowledge and expertise to nurses and doctors alike.
  • To maintain a very high quality of care for all patients attending the Urgent Care Centre.
  • To act as a role model for all nurses within the organisation.

Managerial

  • Develop and maintain a philosophy of nursing care for the ENP working in the Urgent Care Centre.
  • Development of the service provided by ENP/NPs to be in-line with evidenced based practice (e.g. NICE guidelines).
  • Act as a Shift Leader for a span of duty as required by the needs of the Urgent Care Centre.
  • To be aware of the Urgent Care Centre's targets.
  • To manage staff against patient flow in order to meet targets.
  • Undertake and fully participate in the audit process.
  • To order and manage stock levels whilst remaining mindful of the budget within which the Department operates.

Educational

  • To be aware of current nursing trends and development in nursing.
  • To act as a point of reference and guidance for other nurses and doctors in the Urgent Care Centre.

 

Requirements:

Qualifications and Experience

  • 1st level UK registered nurse with minimum five years post registration experience.
  • First level degree or equivalent.
  • Willingness to undertake extended and supplementary nurse prescribing course.
  • Teaching and assessing course.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.
  • Experience in more than one care setting environment, to include Accident and Emergency or Primary Care.
  • Basic IT skills and the ability to demonstrate clinical expertise and knowledge of audit.
  • Case management experience.
  • Knowledge of medico-legal issues affecting nurse practitioner
  • A working knowledge of clinical governance and evidence based practice, including clinical supervision.

Research and Clinical Skills

  • Evidence of up to date based knowledge and skills.
  • Evidence of ability to maintain and monitor high standards of care.
  • Evidence of professional development and knowledge.
  • Evidence of ability to direct and co-ordinate programmes of care working autonomously and collaboratively.
