If you do not hold an EU passport, please take, and successfully complete, the IELTS test (International English Language Testing System), before you can apply for the PLAB exam. The test can be taken in either the UK or your own country
The PLAB exam is used to test your medical knowledge and working practices in the UK. It also tests your medical terminology, as other countries can work very differently.
The PLAB exam comes in two parts. PLAB 1, which can be taken in any country. You will have to wait a couple of months before sitting PLAB 2, this needs to be taken in London.
On passing both exams you will be eligible for limited registration with the GMC. Your registration will not be valid until you have given the GMC a letter of employment. After this time it will take a couple of days for the paper work to be processed by the GMC.
If you have had specialist training you may not need to sit the PLAB exam. This can be checked at the relevant college.
Please see link; http://www.gmc-uk.org/register/plab.htm
We suggest that you apply for registration in person as this eliminates the risk of losing valuable documents in the post. Providing all your documents are in order, registration will normally be granted within 3 to 5 working days.
If you apply for registration by post it will take approximately 4 weeks.
To apply for registration the GMC require the following:
- Your original Medical Qualification Certificate
- A letter of Good Standing from your country's Ministry of Health
- Your passport
- The appropriate registration fee
If your Medical Diploma or Letter of Good Standing does not include a translation into English, please provide a certified translation. Please verify with the GMC before getting this done, so that they recognise the validity of the translation.

Accommodation (UK)
Hospital accommodation is very varied in the United Kingdom and ranges from shared flats to old style nurses' homes in single rooms with shared facilities. It is extremely rare that any married accommodation is available even if both partners are working for the same employer.
On site accommodation can be limited and therefore some employers own buildings in the near vicinity where staff can be housed.
If no hospital accommodation is available or you are travelling with a spouse or partner we will assist you in finding initial accommodation for when you arrive. If this situation arises, it would be advisable to bring references from a previous Landlord.
Opening a Bank Account (UK)
If your bank has an affiliated UK branch, which will provide you with full banking services, then it is a good idea to arrange an account with them before you leave. If you don't have this facility Medacs will assist you in opening an account.
Tax and National Insurance (UK)
Income in the UK is subject to Income Tax and National Insurance contributions that are deducted from your salary by your employer. You will need to obtain a National Insurance number by attending an interview at the local benefits agency, which we will arrange for you following your arrival. In the meantime, you will be granted a temporary number. Waiting times for these appointments can be lengthy.
Meet and Greet (UK)
For permanent/contract positions we will arrange for you to be met at the airport and transported to your accommodation at no cost. We will also ensure that you are orientated to your new surroundings and offer ongoing support to you throughout your time in the UK.
