Experienced Mental Health Nurse Natalie tells us about her role and why she loves her job.
Where did you train?
I trained as a mental health nurse at the College of Nursing and Midwifery, in North Staffordshire. I have since undertaken a Bachelor of Nursing Degree in Community Mental Health Nursing at Keele University and a Postgraduate Diploma in Forensic Mental Health at Birmingham University.
Why did you go into mental health nursing?
I enjoy working with people, particularly communicating, observing and listening to them.
How do you find your role a mental health nurse?
I have been very fortunate during my nursing career to work in a variety of clinical and managerial positions in the NHS, prison and secure services. I love my work. I find it challenging and incredibly rewarding.
What does your typical day as an RNMH entail?
As a mental health nurse, I play an important role in supporting people suffering from various mental health conditions. My work involves helping patients to recover from, or come to terms with their illness. I support them as they go on to lead a positive life.
What is the best thing about your role as a mental health nurse?
I enjoy helping others on their journey of recovery and seeing them move on.
What do you find most challenging?
I find the short staffing levels and the seemingly endless impact on NHS services and resources a challenge.
What would you tell a mental health nurse interested in agency work?
To go for it! I joined Medacs Healthcare in 2014. I love having the opportunity to work on a variety of interesting assignments and meet new people, including patients and other members of staff. I receive excellent support from my Medacs Healthcare consultant and have flexibility around my shifts.
