Registration Requirements

In order to register for community nursing work in England or Wales, you must meet the following requirements:

  • A current NMC pin, or in the process of gaining one
  • Hold a valid UK driving licence and own or have access to a car
  • Have previous community/district nursing experience

The role:

Community nurses play a vital role in providing healthcare outside of a hospital environment. Nurses are expected to provide care, support and advice to patients of all ages, as well as liaising with family members. Daily tasks may include cleaning and dressing wounds, administering medication and aiding with physical examinations.

Core skill:

You will need to possess exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, an ability to solve problems and excellent judgement. You will need to be able to connect with your patients and their families by demonstrating genuine empathy and compassion.  

In addition, you will also require the following skills:

  • Excellent listening and observational skills
  • The ability to work well with others
  • A knowledge of medicine
  • Computer literacy
  • The ability to work well under pressure
  • Sensitivity and patience
  • Quick decision making

Common working environments: 

The role of community nurse offers an engaging and diverse landscape. You will be required to work in a variety of settings including in patients’ homes, residential care homes and health centres. You may be required to treat patients of all ages in rural and urban areas, depending on the nature and location your role.

Typical team set up: 

Depending on the nature and location of your role, community nurses can work as part of a team or on a one-to-one basis with patients and their families. Liaising with doctors regarding patients’ health is also a major part of the role.
