Registered General Nurse (RGN) Job Description

What is an RGN?

As a Registered General Nurse, you’ll work as part of a team of clinicians to deliver excellent care to a wide range of patients. Registered General Nurses can work in a number of different settings, including hospitals, GP practices, residential care homes, prisons, community care centres and schools. You can also work towards developing a specialism in a particular area of medicine, or a particular care setting, such as critical care.

Depending on the setting you choose to work in, you may have responsibilities like:

• Taking and recording patient observations (e.g. blood pressure, heart rate and oxygen saturation)
• Taking blood and other samples, such as urine, sputum or stools
• Carrying out tests such as ECGs
• Fitting cannulas and administering fluids and medication intravenously
• Monitoring and caring for patients who may be seriously ill
• Supporting patients post-surgery
• Writing care plans and making referrals
• Communicating with patients’ families and next of kin
• Helping with ward admissions and discharges

You’ll work with lots of different staff, including:

• Doctors
• Consultants
• Non-clinical staff, such as administrators and support workers
• Care workers

What qualifications and experience do Registered General Nurses need?

To work as a Registered General Nurse through Medacs, you’ll need to:

• Have completed a nursing degree or equivalent apprenticeship
• Be a registered nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)
• Have at least 12 months of post-qualification experience
• Pass an enhanced background check

You’ll also need a number of key skills and attributes, such as:

• Ability to stay calm in stressful situations
• Empathy and excellent listening skills
• Strong communication
• Ability to work alone and as part of a wider care team
• A patient and methodical approach to tasks
