Role: Band 4 Associate Practitioner
Shifts: Full Time (Mixture of day/night shifts on a rota basis)
Location: Bracknell


Our client, at Lighthouse Laboratory based in Bracknell are seeking Band 4 Associate Practitioners to work on a contract to provide Covid-19 resilience testing services. This will initially be for a standby service working with a team of 50 staff members.

The service is to be provided until 31st March 2023.

Staff numbers will be substantially increased if testing within the community is increased. After a short ramp-up period, the BSPS Lighthouse Testing Service will operate 24 hours a day, 7 days per week.

During periods of standby, the employee will be contracted to work 37.5 hours per week on average, excluding meal breaks. Shift arrangements will be variable and determined in accordance with service need. BSPS operates a 24 hour per day, 7 day per week service, and shift arrangements will reflect this. Shift lengths will range from 8 hours to 12 hours (inclusive of meal breaks). Candidates will need to be fully available and flexible.

All candidates will be scheduled to work 5 days in a week including weekends, on a rota basis. Rotas will be published one week in advance.


Technical and Clinical Responsibilities
* Participate in a range of duties within the department, under supervision or without supervision following successful competency assessment
* Carry out biomedical procedures including maintenance, monitoring of sophisticated equipment and audit in accordance with departmental SOPs
* Be able to effectively deal with simple day to day situations and problems, referring to senior staff when appropriate
* Demonstrate a robust knowledge of national and local health and safety standards
* Effectively contribute to the continual improvement of service and identify risks to scientist staff
* Effectively maintain stock control, place orders and take appropriate action as required
* Participate in the review of departmental SOPs
* Ensure the safe disposal of specimens and waste and to ensure cleaning and maintenance of work areas and equipment is carried out in accordance with SOPs
* Work with and process COVID-19 testing samples
* Ensures that samples meet acceptance criteria, dealing with any non-compliance in accordance with departmental protocols
* Ensures sample is appropriate type for all tests and assesses samples for urgency, informing scientific staff of such samples
* Is fully conversant with relevant departmental policies and SOPs, ensuring that personal performance complies with Accreditation standards
* In conjunction with scientific staff, ensures the validity of results by the use of appropriate control materials
* Works in cooperation with scientific staff to ensure workload is processed in a timely and efficient manner
* Performs telephone duties that include making and receiving calls from and to the laboratory
* To undertake sample reception, preparation, analysis and recording of results in accordance with approved procedures.
* To undertake the reception and checking of specimens and to ensure accurate identification of specimens
* To accurately enter patient details and required tests into the computer system.
* To understand which pre examination process is required for each of the samples to be assessed.
* Use and maintain equipment within the department in compliance with departmental policy.

Role Responsibilities:

* To be responsible for own work which will include all aspects of the technical work, equipment and quality system
* To ensure the timely and efficient provision of diagnostics services
* To take day to day responsibility for the quality of technical work produced
* To ensure that clinical requests are met according to agreed policies on availability of tests and priorities in accordance with user guide
* To ensure that work is carried out in line with SOPs and/or Departmental policy
* To monitor quality control of all the tests performed
* To assist in the preparation of SOPs and other documentation
* Maintain reagent records, both paper and electronic, as part of section stock control system
* To ensure that statutory and Trust requirements for record keeping of results are met
* To participate in audits as required
* To monitor and produce reports as required to laboratory manager in relation to workload and staff within section
* To maintain adequate stock of all reagents and consumables, through timely ordering of supplies
* To undertake regular stock check and audit as required
* To be able to work within department with the minimum of supervision as directed by scientific staff
* Decontamination of laboratory working areas and equipment according to SOPs. Maintain a tidy and clean workplace, according to H&S regulations and good laboratory practice
* Perform risk assessments for procedures and equipment prior to introduction into the laboratory
* To undertake any other duties which may be required, which are consistent with the nature and grade of the post
* Works to achieve competencies as appropriate to grade
* Performs a range of administrative tasks in all sections of the laboratory as required. This includes archiving and retrieval of specimens and data, maintenance of archived material and audit trails
* Ensures efficient use of resources and is aware of stock levels and rotation, storage conditions, batch numbers and expiry dates, thus ensuring the viability of reagents.
