Medacs Healthcare is looking for a Consultant in Stroke Medicine to join an NHS district hospital based in South West England.

Salary scale: £84,559 to £114,003 per annum plus Relocation Package

Hours: Full time, 10 PA's contract

Type of contact: Fixed term for 12 months

We are seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic consultant with the passion to develop and deliver high-quality stroke care for the Somerset population.

There are 4 HASU beds in the combined acute cardiac and stroke care unit. A further 12 bed acute stroke unit is based on ward 8B, providing acute and short-term assessment of all stroke patients. The unit is supported by a Nurse Stroke consultant and a further 3 dedicated stroke Clinical Nurse Specialists.

Rapid access TIA clinic has been running since 2004 providing rapid assessment with agreed protocols for brain imaging (MRI) and carotid imaging.

Responsibility for care on the Stroke ward at the hospital is shared between the 2 wte Stroke Consultants. They are supported by 2 F1, 2 F2 doctors, 2 Specialist Registrars and a Trust Doctor. There are weekly multidisciplinary team meetings.

The Trust's current SSNAP rating is C and our thrombolysis rate is the highest in the southwest at 24%. Thrombolysis is provided 24/7 at the Hospital according to AGWS stroke network protocols.

The service is delivered by the Emergency team, the Stroke team and the on call Medical Registrars, supported by the AGWS stroke network. There are agreed protocols in place, including a pre-alert system.

The Trust has a very active R&D department with established, dedicated staff to support research. The stroke department is actively engaged in research with 9 clinical trials in hyper-acute, acute and rehabilitation aspects of stroke.

Proposed Job Plan

Outpatient clinic - 2 sessions 8 hours 2.0

Ward round/ward referrals - 3 sessions 12 hours 3.0

Multi-disciplinary meeting and ESD - Wednesday am 4 hours 1.0

Flexible Thrombolysis/High Risk TIA - Friday pm 4 hours 1.0

Clinical Admin Patient administration related to clinical care. - 6 hours 1.5

Supporting Activities - General SPA unscheduled - 6 hours 1.5


  • MBBS and MRCP or equivalent
  • Full GMC Registration with a license to practice
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via: CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of the interview date) or CESR or European Community Rights
  • Depth and breadth of clinical experience in General Medicine
  • Experience in a special interest that will complement those existing in the department
