Medacs Healthcare is looking for a Consultant Ophthalmologist with Subspecialty Interest in Paediatric Ophthalmology to join a large university hospital based in West Midlands.

Salary scale: £84,559 to £114,003 per annum for 10 PAs

Type of contact: Locum Consultant - Fixed term for 12 months / or substantive

Hours: Full Time, 10 Programmed activities

Main Clinical Duties:

  • Provide Ophthalmic services.
  • Complete clinical sessions in theatre, specialist, and general clinics.
  • Complete supporting professional activities
  • To develop enhanced clinical skills, especially in the assessment and management of acutely ill patients.
  • To have excellent team-working skills with the abilities and professional attitude to work well in a multi-professional team.
  • To deliver clinical and quality targets agreed both nationally and locally with clinical teams and commissioners.
  • To follow patients throughout their clinical pathways.

The successful applicant will have a particular subspecialty interest in Paediatric Ophthalmology and also be able to provide a general ophthalmology service. The Trust has invested in a new department which opened in June 2017. The Eye Department has modern facilities in which to deliver excellent ophthalmic care for the patients. The new facility has new furniture and equipment that supports staff and patients. The Trust has also invested a further £1.2M capital investment building a dedicated Cataract Suite, which includes a fully equipped cataract theatre and clinical rooms.

For a full-time contract, the job plan will be divided on average per week (pro-rata for a part time post) as:

  • Direct Clinical Care: 8.0 PA's (clinical activity, clinically related activity, predictable and unpredictable emergency work) On call 1 in 9 weeks which attracts 0.5 PA.
  • Supporting Professional Activities: 2.0 PA's includes CPD, audit, teaching, research, revalidation, VMI/TCI)

The job plan would include 6 clinical sessions divided between theatre, specialist and general clinics.


  • Full Registration and a licence to practise with the General Medical Council (GMC)
  • Eligible for entry onto the GMC Specialist Register via CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview), CESR or European Community Rights
  • Post CCT Fellowship experience in a subspecialist area.
  • FRCOphth or equivalent
