Main duties of the job

The Hospital provides an active acute thrombolysis service and also makes use of the specialist Telestroke On-Call Service out of hours and at weekends. There is an opportunity to join the general medicine On-Call Rota, Telestroke On-Call rota, or both.

The post supports continued development of the Stroke Service and you will work alongside two existing Stroke Consultants, as well as a wider Care of the Elderly Team and General Medicine colleagues. You will also liaise with Neuroradiology, Neurosurgery and Vascular Surgery Teams, as well as Stroke Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Matrons, Ward Managers, Nurses, Therapists and Secretaries, to assist in providing excellent care to our patients at all stages of the patient's hospital journey. You will provide clinical leadership to a dedicated team.

We are looking for a candidate who is proficient in Stroke Medicine to provide acute medical and rehabilitation care to our patients. You will contribute in providing a high quality TIA Service. A new, combined Acute and Rehabilitation Stroke Unit was opened in December 2019.

There are also plans to open a new Ambulatory Stroke Unit later this year. You will see patients in the Combined Stroke Unit, the TIA Clinic, and undertake Out-Patient Clinics. You will also be allocated time for SPA and clinical administration work.

Clinics will be held in the Day hospital or main outpatient department. A typical outpatient clinic would include 7 patients (2 new and 5 follow-up patients). An IMT/FY2 or ST3+ doctor will be present when on call duties allow. TIA clinics are held in the purpose-built TIA clinic room on the Stroke Unit. A typical TIA clinic involves reviewing 3 patients, with 3 protected carotid doppler slots per day and 2 protected MRI brain slots (7 days per week) available for use. A typical acute stroke ward round involves reviewing 4 to 7 patients and rehab patients are divided between consultants for their care (8 patients per consultant).
