Updates to GMC Insurance and Indemnity Guidance

The GMC has recently updated their insurance and indemnity guidance to remind doctors that their policy should cover their full range of medical practice in the UK.

Doctors covered by a state-backed scheme, such as the new clinical negligence schemes for GPs in the UK still need to make arrangements for:

  • Any areas of their practice that aren’t covered, such as any private work
  • Any need to support criminal, disciplinary or fitness to practice investigations
  • Any liabilities that arise from their practice as a doctor, whenever a claim is brought, such as ‘run-off’ cover

The updated guidance also advises doctors who hold, or plan to hold, European wide indemnity cover arranged outside of the UK, to check whether their policy will still cover their practice, if and when the UK leaves the European Union.
