This is an excellent opportunity to combine rewarding clinical work, specialist development, and flexible working, with the support of a leading NHS framework agency.

About the Role

As a Consultant Rheumatologist, you will join an established multidisciplinary team providing a comprehensive rheumatology service to Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary and the wider community.

You will work closely with consultant colleagues, specialist nurses, physiotherapists, and wider MDT teams to deliver high‑quality outpatient care, inflammatory arthritis management, biologics monitoring, and specialist clinics.

The role offers opportunities to develop subspecialty interests, contribute to service development, and shape rheumatology pathways within a modern, well‑equipped hospital environment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide consultant‑level care for rheumatology outpatients and day‑unit patients
  • Lead and participate in specialist clinics (e.g., inflammatory arthritis, connective tissue disease, osteoporosis)
  • Oversee biologic and DMARD monitoring pathways
  • Contribute to MDTs, including radiology and specialist case discussions
  • Provide advice and support to acute teams regarding rheumatology inpatients
  • Support and supervise junior doctors, trainees, and specialist nurses
  • Contribute to clinical governance, audit, service improvement, and GIRFT initiatives
  • Support education, appraisal, and CPD activities within the department

About the department and setting

  • Modern, purpose‑built Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary (opened 2017)
  • Dedicated rheumatology outpatient and infusion facilities
  • Strong multidisciplinary team with specialist nurses and therapy support
  • Excellent links with regional centres for complex rheumatology care
  • Supportive consultant group with opportunities for subspecialty development

What we're Looking For

Essential:

  • MBBS or equivalent medical degree
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for Rheumatology (or within 6 months of CCT/CESR)
  • UK Right to Work
  • DBS/PVG check (or willingness to complete)

Desirable:

  • Interest in developing a recognised subspecialty area
  • Experience contributing to teaching, audit, or service development
  • Experience in biologics management or specialist rheumatology pathways
