Medacs Healthcare is working in partnership with NHS Dumfries & Galloway to recruit a Consultant in Ophthalmology to join a friendly, forward‑thinking department delivering high‑quality ophthalmic care across the region.

About the Role

As a Consultant Ophthalmologist, you will join an established and supportive team providing a comprehensive ophthalmology service to Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary and the wider community.

You will work closely with consultant colleagues, specialist nurses, orthoptists, optometrists, and wider MDT teams to deliver high‑quality outpatient care, cataract surgery, emergency ophthalmology, and specialist clinics.

The role offers opportunities to develop subspecialty interests, contribute to service development, and shape ophthalmology pathways within a modern, well‑equipped hospital environment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide consultant‑level care for ophthalmology outpatients and day‑case patients
  • Lead and participate in specialist clinics (e.g., glaucoma, medical retina, cataract, paediatrics depending on interest)
  • Perform cataract surgery and other relevant ophthalmic procedures
  • Provide senior input into emergency ophthalmology and acute referrals
  • Participate in MDTs, governance meetings, and service planning
  • Support and supervise junior doctors, trainees, and specialist nurses
  • Contribute to clinical governance, audit, service improvement, and GIRFT initiatives
  • Support education, appraisal, and CPD activities within the department

What we're Looking For

Essential:

  • MBBS or equivalent medical degree
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for Ophthalmology(or within 6 months of CCT/CESR)
  • UK Right to Work
  • DBS/PVG check (or willingness to complete)

Desirable:

  • Interest in developing a recognised subspecialty area (e.g., glaucoma, medical retina, paediatrics)
  • Experience contributing to teaching, audit, or service development
  • Experience in cataract surgery and core ophthalmic procedures
