This is an excellent opportunity to combine rewarding clinical work, specialist development, and flexible working, with the support of a leading NHS framework agency.

About the Role

As a Consultant Anaesthetist, you will join an established and supportive team providing a comprehensive anaesthetic service to Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary and the wider community.

You will work closely with consultant colleagues, theatre teams, intensivists, surgeons, and wider MDT staff to deliver safe, effective anaesthesia across a broad range of surgical specialties.
The role offers opportunities to develop subspecialty interests, contribute to service development, and shape anaesthetic pathways within a modern, purpose‑built hospital environment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide consultant‑level anaesthetic care across elective and emergency theatres
  • Deliver perioperative assessment and optimisation for surgical patients
  • Participate in the critical care rota (if applicable to the local service model)
  • Provide senior input into emergency anaesthesia and resuscitation
  • Lead and participate in specialist sessions depending on interest (e.g., obstetric anaesthesia, regional anaesthesia, ICU)
  • Contribute to MDTs, governance meetings, and service planning
  • Support and supervise junior doctors, trainees, ODPs, and wider theatre staff
  • Contribute to clinical governance, audit, service improvement, and GIRFT initiatives
  • Support education, appraisal, and CPD activities within the department

About the department and setting

  • Modern, purpose‑built Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary (opened 2017)
  • Well‑equipped theatres and critical care facilities
  • Broad surgical case mix including general surgery, orthopaedics, obstetrics, ENT, ophthalmology, and trauma
  • Strong multidisciplinary collaboration across perioperative and critical care services
  • Supportive consultant group with opportunities for subspecialty development

What we're Looking For

Essential:

  • MBBS or equivalent medical degree
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for Anaesthetics (or within 6 months of CCT/CESR)
  • UK Right to Work
  • DBS/PVG check (or willingness to complete)

Desirable:

  • Interest in developing a recognised subspecialty area (e.g., obstetric anaesthesia, regional anaesthesia, ICU)
  • Experience contributing to teaching, audit, or service development
  • Experience in advanced airway management and regional techniques
