Swansea Bay University Health Board (SBUHB) is inviting applications for a Consultant Histopathologist to join the Department of Cellular Pathology, part of the largest medical facility in Wales delivering national and regional specialist diagnostic services.
This is an exciting opportunity to join a UKAS‑accredited service (ISO 15189) at a time of significant transformation, as the Directorate evolves towards academically integrated Cellular‑Molecular Pathology, supporting genomic medicine and precision diagnostics.
About the Service
The Department of Cellular Pathology operates across Morriston and Singleton Hospitals in Swansea and provides services to:
- Swansea, Bridgend, Neath and Port Talbot
- Regional lymphoma diagnostics (All‑Wales Lymphoma Panel)
- South Wales sarcoma diagnostics
- HER‑2 testing for hospitals across South‑West Wales
You will join an established team of 13 Consultants delivering high‑quality surgical pathology and cytopathology services. Autopsy work is optional.
SBUHB offers a flexible approach to working, including home reporting, and actively supports job‑planned time for specialist interests, teaching, research, and CPD.
Main Duties of the Role
- Provide diagnostic histopathology and cytopathology services
- Contribute to MDTs and regional specialist services
- Participate in service development, audit, and governance
- Support undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
- Develop a specialist interest aligned with service needs
- Engage in research and innovation through the ARCH collaboration
You will be based in Swansea at either Morriston or Singleton Hospital, by mutual agreement.
Person Specification
Essential Criteria
- Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
- On the GMC Specialist Register (or within 6 months at interview)
- CCT in Histopathology (or equivalent for non‑UK applicants)
- FRCPath (or equivalent qualification)
- Evidence of effective team working and leadership
- Experience in service improvement, audit, and teaching
Desirable Criteria
- Subspecialist interest
- Research and academic involvement
- Teaching or medical education qualification
- Experience in quality improvement methodologies
