If you’re exploring a career as a PIP Functional Assessor and want to understand whether this role could be the right next step for you, you’re in the right place.
You’ll find an overview of what the role involves, what to expect and why so many Registered Nurses (RN, RMN, RNLD, SPQDN) Paramedics, Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists choose to join our Health Assessment Services team.
We’ve been delivering Health Assessment Services since 2013, and we’re incredibly proud of the difference our PIP Functional Assessors make every day across the UK.
Here’s everything you need to help you decide if this role feels right for you.
As part of our team, you’ll carry out assessments in person or virtually for people applying for Personal Independence Payment (PIP) or those referred through the Government’s Health Advisory Assessment Services.
You’ll use your clinical skills in a new way and play an important part in the functional and disability assessment process, supporting people across the UK. Many of the individuals you meet will have complex conditions, giving you the chance to broaden your clinical knowledge.
You’ll review the information they provide, look at any medical evidence and gather more detail about how their health affects everyday life. You’ll then complete an assessment and write a personalised report that reflects their functional ability and meets the standards set by the Department for Work and Pensions.
To join our team as a PIP Functional Assessor, you’ll need to be registered with either the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) or the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), with at least one year of UK clinical experience.
Eligible professions include:

One of the benefits of joining Medacs Healthcare is that we cover the cost of your professional registration. Once you pass your six‑month probation, we’ll reimburse your NMC or HCPC registration fee.
When you join Medacs Healthcare, you become part of a team that supports you, understands your work and helps you grow in your role.

Many of our PIP Functional Assessors tell us they enjoy using their clinical skills in a different way while enjoying the benefits of hybrid working. They often join us for the work‑life balance and stay because they feel valued, supported and part of a caring team.
Your journey as a PIP Functional Assessor begins with our dedicated training team. You’ll take part in a mix of in‑office and at‑home training, supported by colleagues with a wide range of clinical experience.
During your training, you’ll build the knowledge and confidence you need for the role. Once you’ve completed your training, you’ll be able to work independently while still receiving guidance from your Clinical Support Manager. You’ll also have access to ongoing learning and development opportunities, which count towards your CPD and help you maintain your professional registration.
We have offices across Yorkshire and the North East of England, and our roles are either office‑based or hybrid. Hybrid roles mean you’ll spend three days in the office and two days working from home, giving you the balance of staying connected with your team while reducing your commute.
