Like community nursing, Complex Care Nurses work in a community setting or the patient’s home. However, unlike traditional community nursing roles, a Complex Care Nurse provides care and attention to just one patient who they see at every shift. This enables them to get to know their patients and their families well and be more empowered to provide a high level of care, specifically designed to meet the needs of the individual.

Complex care nursing specialises in a wide variety of conditions and complex care needs, including brain injury, stroke, spinal injuries, neurological conditions, motor neurone disease, air management needs, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, physical disabilities, genetic conditions, developmental delays and learning disabilities.

What does the role of a Complex Care Nurse at MPFT entail?

Playing a key role in the care and rehabilitation of patients, typical duties include:

• Meeting patients daily, providing tailored, support plans in line with their specific diagnosis/prognosis
• Arranging any ongoing, long-term support for after a patient leaves your care
• Building trusting relationships with patients, putting them at ease
• Listening and talking to patients, offering advice and reassurance
• Working closely with other healthcare professionals to agree the most appropriate treatment plans for those in your care
• Working with and advising relatives and carers on patient conditions, outlooks, treatments and progress
• Keeping medical records up to date
• Talking through available therapies, support networks and social activities that may help to improve mental health and wellbeing
• Maintaining a positive attitude, even in difficult situations

Essential requirements:

• You are a Registered Nurse
• You have at least two years’ post-graduate experience and six months’ NHS experience within the last three years
• You will need to pass an enhanced background check
