Working as an Oncology Consultant

Oncology consultants are responsible for providing important cancer care services. From diagnosing early-stage cancer symptoms to providing late-stage treatments and therapies, you’ll be using your specialist skills and experience to provide important care to patients and their families.

What does an oncology consultant do?

As an oncology consultant, you’ll be leading a multidisciplinary team to carry out a range of cancer treatments and therapies for your patients. Usually based at hospitals or in specialist oncology departments, you’ll be using cutting-edge technology to help diagnose and treat cancers.

You’ll also be working closely with patients and their families to help them recover. This may mean carrying out chemotherapy or using drug and hormone therapy. And, in some cases, you’ll also be providing palliative care.

The daily responsibilities of oncology consultants are varied. You’ll be:

• coordinating treatment plans with your team
• providing constant patient monitoring
• communicating with patients and their families
• leading a team of medical professionals
• recognising and reviewing changes in a patient’s condition
• performing administrative and clerical tasks.

You’ll be working closely with a team of medical professionals, including:

• doctors
• nurses
• hospital receptionists.

What qualifications and skills do you need for oncology consultant roles with Medacs?

To work as an oncology consultant, you’ll need  specialist skills, qualifications as well as plenty of experience. Formal qualifications you will need include:

• a degree in medicine recognised by the General Medical Council (GMC)
• specialty oncology training
• relevant experience at consultant level
• Right to Work in the UK
• passing an enhanced background check
• CCT (desirable not essential).

You will also need a number of soft skills to help you in this role. Some important skills to have include:

• having an empathetic manner with people
• good communication skills
• emotional resilience
• confidence leading a team
• an interest in trialling new ways of treating cancer and an active approach to testing them.
